The Washington Freedom started their defense of the W-League title with a win over the Long Island Rough Riders in their season opener 3-1. After the long trip up to Michael Tully Field in Long Island the Freedom started off strong, controlling much of the play and possession.
Long Island native Christie Welsh opened the scoring in the on the 6:00 minute mark after some great combination play and a quick switch of the point of attack when Emily Janss played the ball into Welsh, who turned her defender the wrong way to finish from 12 yards out. The Freedom continued to press through the first half but finished the half leading 1-0. Read On
Washington Freedom Names Hooper to Lead Marketing
The Washington Freedom, the Washington D.C. franchise in Women's Professional Soccer (WPS), officially announced today that John Hooper will be the Freedom's Director of Marketing, Sales and Communications. Formerly the Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Soccer America Magazine, Hooper will immediately start preparing for the start of the inaugural WPS season in 2009. Read On
Freedom Signs Two Illinois Stars
The Washington Freedom announce today the signing of University of Illinois players Christen Karniski and Ella Masar for the 2008 W-League season.Karniski, a 2006 Illinois graduate, joined the Freedom after playing in the Swedish Damallsvenskan League with Bälinge. The Illinois record holder for most games played and most games started as a left back, was the Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Year and second team All-American in 2005. As a junior in the fall of 2004, Karniski helped lead the Illini to an NCAA Elite Eight appearance, earning second team All-Big Ten and All-Region honors in the process. Read On
Freedom Defeat Penn State in Charity Match The Washington Freedom won their first match of the year in a Preseason game on Saturday over the Penn State Nitany Lions at the KICKS Against Breast Cancer Tournament by a score of 2-0. After the Freedom settled into the game, Sarah Huffman opened up the scoring in the 37th minute after Christie Welsh beat several players as she dribbled along the end line from the left side of the box pulling a fantastic pass back to find Huffman who was waiting about 10 yards out in front of goal who easily passed the ball into the back of the net. Washington Freedom Announce Super-Y League Details
 The Washington Freedom is pleased to announce its 2008 USL Super-Y League & Super-20 League Program. After a successful season in 2006 with the U20's winning the North American Final and 2007 saw both the U15's and U20's playing in the North American Finals, the Freedom will expand to six teams in 2008, with teams U13-U16 & U20's. 3/7/08 - The Washington Freedom and DC United are announcing that the Washington Freedom will take over the DC United's girls Super-Y team for the 2008 season. Read On Clyde Watson Named NSCAA National Youth Coach of the Year
BALTIMORE, MD -- Clyde Watson was named on Friday, January 19th as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's National Coach of the Year. On top of Watson's duties with the Washington Freedom senior team, Watson also coaches the Girls Under-17 McLean Freedom which won the 2007 USYSA Girls Under-16 National Championship. The MPS Freedom team has also already won the Virginia State Championship and is set to play in the Region 1 Tournament this July as they seek to defend their National Championship. Congratulations Clyde!
Watson Named Regional Youth Coach of the Year Clyde Watson was named the East Region Girls Youth Coach of the Year. Watson is a finalist for this year's National Coach of the Year award which will be announced at the 2008 NSCAA Convention on Friday, January 18th in Baltimore. Watson's McLean Freedom team won the 2007 USYSA U16 National Championship this past July in Texas.
USL Announces First 11 Club Teams in US Washington Freedom Named #6 Best Girls Club in Nation
TAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced today the final Super Y-League First and Second 11 Club rankings for the 2007 season, recognizing the league's top competitive and administrative clubs. The release follows the SYL North American Finals, where 21 of the clubs in the rankings competed for ten championships held late last month in Tampa, Florida.
