BOYDS, MD (December 9, 2009) After a long college season, December is becoming a busy month for Freedom Future players as 5 players have been called into several National Team Camps. The Freedom Future players all played significant roles for their respective college teams after a very successful summer playing with the Freedom in the USL W-League helping the team on it’s way to the Championship match.
Christine Nairn heads the list as she was called into the Senior Women’s National Team camp currently being held at the Home Depot Center in California. Nairn, who was recently named as a finalist for the Young Female Athlete of the Year Award by US Soccer, joins Washington Freedom WPS players Abby Wambach and Cat Whitehill. Nairn was called into the Full National Team earlier in 2009 and scored her first goal in her second appearance in a game again Canada on July 22nd in Charleston, SC.
Tiffany McCarty and Toni Pressley, Freedom Futures and Floriday State teammates were both called into the US U20 National Team Camp by coach Jillian Ellis that will begin December 12th in Sunrise, Florida. McCarty, a three year member of the Freedom’s W-League program comes off a tremendous season where she was named as the ACC Offensive Player of the Year and has been named as a finalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy along with her Freedom and FSU teammate Becky Edwards and Freedom Teammate Katie Schoepfer. McCarty finished her season at FSU having started in all 25 games and scored 17 goals and 7 assists as their team made it to the Elite-8 of the NCAA Tournament.
A versatile Toni Pressley, who played in the backline for the Freedom and FSU, has been called in as a forward for the U20 National Team. This past summer while at U20 Camp in Boulder, CO Pressley scored two goals in a friendly against the Canadian U20 National Team. Pressley helped FSU’s backline this year on their way to the Elite-8 of the NCAA Tournament, starting in all 25 matches while also scoring 2 goals and 6 assists.
Defender Molly Allen has been called into her second Canadian U20 National Team Camp this fall by coach Carolina Morace and it set to report on December 10-20 in Boca Ratan, FL. Allen who attends Virginia Commonwealth coached by former Freedom player Tiffany Roberts had a strong early season until injury kept her off the field. Allen, who hails from Halifax, Nova Scotia, came to the Freedeom in 2009. Allen played the full 90 minutes in the Freedom’s USL W-League Championship match where the team came up just short in a 2-1 loss to the Pali Blues.
Katie Schoepfer was named to the U23 National Team Camp by Bill Irwin that is set to run December 13-20. Schoepfer joins Washington Freedom WPS player Allie Long at this camp. Schoepfer had a tremendous senior year and was named the 2009 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, unanimous First Team All-Big Ten Selection, NSCAA First Team All-Great Lakes honoree and M.A.C. Hermann Trophy Finalist.
