COACH'S CORNER June 8-2008
The Washington Freedom continues its June home stand tonight against the New Jersey Wildcats. The Freedom will be looking to bounce back from its disappointing home opener that produced the Freedom's first W-League game without scoring a goal. The Wildcats are off to a great start with two wins and a tie for 7 points and outscoring its opponents 10-4.
The Freedom staff and players are extremely excited about the 2008 W-League season and the opportunity to defend its Championship as well as prepare for the WPS Pro Season in 2009. We have always strived to put the best product on the field and are confident we will do that again this season.
Our goals this year will be to develop and improve as a team and as individual players. Watch for WUSA veterans Emily Janss, Lori Lindsey and Kelly Golebiowski and Christie Welsh to lead the way. We are proud to welcome back Sarah Huffman, Rebecca Moros, Kati Jo Spisak, Alex Singer and Ali Andrzejewski. In keeping with our mission of developing players for the senior team level we also like to recognize Chante Sandiford, Eliza Bennett Hattan, Madison Keller and Megan Mills all of who have been involved with our youth teams over the past 5 years. New comers for this season are Becky Sauerbrunn, Christen Karniski, Ella Masar and Jill Gilbeau. Watch for entertaining and attacking soccer with a high level of speed of play.
The Wildcats have always been a tough match for the Freedom over the past three years, and last season held on at home for a well deserved tie. Watch for Aimee Bresani (Univ. of Maryland) and Lissette Brandao (Rutgers) to provide the scoring punch. Goalkeeper Robin Jones is coming off a great season in goal for the Wildcats. Watch for the Freedom to use its possession game to spread out the Wildcats and do a better job of finishing its chances and set pieces.
Thanks for supporting the Washington Freedom and enjoy the game.
